William Sidney Mount, one of the leading painters of such works, completed 'Boys Caught Napping in a Field' in 1848 . The painting, was commissioned by George Washington Strong, for whom it represented a childhood memory. In this humorous narrative the artist shows that two lazy country boys have been mischievous by playing cards and napping under a tree, instead of working in the fields. With the father approaching with a stick, we can sense that punishment is imminent. The goat's skull hanging on the tree is symbolic of the risks that can incur from neglecting ones duties.
