“El Jaleo” is a painting by John Singer Sargent. It depicts a Spanish Gypsy dancer dancing to the tune of the accompanying musicians around her. It features restrained colouring, exotic models, and dramatic light effects. Inspired by his trip to Spain and North Africa, Sargent was impressed by the Gypsy dancers theatrical manner and costumes and started working on smaller oil paintings. This version is larger in scale, capturing the grandness of a performing stage.
