Henry Alexander was a American genre painter who worked in San Francisco and New York; he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. The subject of this painting is Thomas Price (1837–1912) who was a chemist and a consultant to international mining companies. The interior setting is Price’s San Francisco laboratory.
