Leisure and Labor, 1858 by Frank Blackwell Mayer - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings

from $430.00

‘Leisure and Labour’ was painted by Frank Blackwell Mayer three years before the outbreak of the Civil war. The painting, which explores the blacksmith theme, was intended to be an expression of Northerners antipathy towards the landed gentry of the South. The painting juxtaposes two men: on the right there is a well-dressed Southerner leaning casually against the barn door with his legs crossed and hands in his pockets; on the left there is an industrious blacksmith hard at work. The Southerner is observing the Blacksmith nail a horseshoe to the hoof of a horse whilst the horse handler stands at the rear. The leisure aspect of the painting is underscored by the relaxed, observant posture of the Southerner and the presence of the grey hound dog a his feet. Greyhounds dogs were often used for show or for leisurely sporting activities.
