Nearing the Issue at the Cockpit, 1879 by Horace Bonham - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings

from $1,450.00

Cockfighting is an illegal blood sport in which roosters are placed in a ring and forced to fight to the death for the entertainment of onlookers. In addition to cruelty to animals, cockfighting is often linked with other crimes such as illegal gambling. The painting shows a crowd of men, from different walks of life, who have gathered at the edge of the cockpit to watch a fight between two birds. The artist does not show the birds. There is however a sense of anticipation in the air as the men lean forward; all eyes are focussed intently on the activity unfolding before them. To the rear of the men, a poster of rules, hangs on the tavern wall.

This is an image of the famous artwork. We will hand paint a beautiful reproduction of this masterpiece in the size below.
