Peaceable Kingdom 1848 By Edward Hicks - American paintings - Handmade oil painting on canvas

from $403.00

Edward Hicks was a Quaker preacher. His paintings are quintessential works of America Folk Art. 'The Peaceful Kingdom' illustrates a passage from the old testament book of Isaiah (11:6): “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the suckling child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice's den." It prophesizes a new era when all the animals will dwell in harmony led by a small child (seen in this painting with his arm around a tiger and reaching out to a bear).Hicks painted 62 versions of the theme emphasising different details of the text. Hicks assembled his paintings from prints and zoological sources. His compositions lack fluidity, almost as if the figures are pasted on the surface and the scale is often distorted.Edward Hicks was a Quaker preacher.
