The Artist in His Museum by Charles Willson Peale - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings

from $280.00

“The Artist in His Museum” is a complex self-portrait by Charles Willson Peale. In this painting, done in 1822, the artist is already 81 years old. He is at the Peale’s Museum, yes, the artist’s own museum. The painting is divided into three parts. The foreground is done in low light and features natural objects of the museum. In the middle ground is Peale himself, inviting the audience to enter his museum as he pulls back a crimson curtain, revealing the wide-array of collection inside. This is the third part: the inside of the museum which contains thousands of specimens of birds and other animals, above them are portraits of notable Americans and revolutionary heroes.
