The Early Scholar, 1865 by Eastman Johnson - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings

from $277.00

The subject of the painting - a child warming beside a stove - is one that Johnson returned to again and again. It is a cold morning and the schoolboy has headed to school early, before the arrival of the other students. In the centre foreground is the young boy, the profile of his round face is lost in the shadows. He is at the old stove, leaning in to warm his hands and feet. There are logs of wood lying about the stove. The rocking chair he sits in also tilts forward. There is an orange and yellow corona around the stove door suggesting the glow of the heat. The schoolboy is poignantly alone in the large chair. He is in the surroundings of an empty classroom.
