The Red Cross Knight 1793 by John Singleton Copley - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings

from $370.00

‘The Red Cross Knight, 1793’ is an allegorical portrayal of the artist's children (John Singleton Copley, Jr., Mary and Elizabeth) as characters in a scene from Edmund Spenser's Elizabethan poem, titled “Faerie Queene”. The poem, published in 1596, is about a Christian soldier’s search for truth. The idyllic scene in the painting shows an encounter between three young figures standing on a terrace in front of a balustrade. The red cape billows over the left arm of the knight in his armour as he raises his silver shield. The two sisters in the painting are the personifications of virtue. They wear gowns of a 18th century design in the colours described in Spenser’s poem – pure white and heavenly blue. The distant landscape includes a warm pink and blue tinted sky.
