The Skater (Portrait of William Grant) 1782 by Gilbert Stuart - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings

from $330.00

The setting for the portrait is the Serpentine, a popular skating spot in Hyde Park, London. The skater in the painting is William Grant, a young Scottish lawyer, who had come to London for a sitting for a full-length portrait. He is dressed entirely in black. Behind him to the right two skaters sit at the edge of the ice, pulling on their skates, while two other men stand under a tree. The colour palette used is black, gray, and white, with slight touches of red on the clothing of the background figures. At the time, the combination of the full-length portrait with the act of skating was a ground-breaking and novel theme, within the tradition of English portraiture, which catapulted Stuart into fame.
