Nikolai Astrup was a highly innovative Norwegian painter who develops a distinct style. Most of his works feature the lush landscapes of Western Norway, portraying the traditional way of life in the region. He was noted for his intense use of colours. One of his most celebrated works is "The White Horse in Spring." Because of the unrealistic blend of colours, the white horse seems to camouflage with the background: the grass, the pathway, the house on the hill, the trees, the clouds.
