Frederic Lord Leighton's visit to Lindos, on the Greek island of Rhodes, had a huge impact on his craft and style. During his visit in the said island, he made several sketches of the locals, the bay, the sky and the everyday life of the island. He returned to these sketches later and the results are both modern and classical. One of these paintings is the "Winding the Skein." Painted in the classical tradition, this particular work features a lady gracefully sitting and a young girl winding the skein on a rooftop. At the background are the beautiful bay, the rocks and hills, and the cloudy sky. An otherwise ordinary island life immortalized through the genius of one Frederic Lord Leighton.
