An old woman in the foreground holds the newly born baby. To her right stands an enigmatic woman, who appears to be out of the picture, like she is not part of the whole scene. She is believed to be the portrait of the donor. She is staring directly at the audience and is holding a basket full of eggs, which is said to be a symbol of purity and virginity. The painting is notable for Zurbaran's rich colour scheme and subtle play of light and shadow. The result is an airy composition with richly painted drapery and solid massed figures.
