"The Mermaids," also known as Drowned Maidens, is an oil on canvas painting by the Russian painter Ivan Kramskoi. The painting is at once beautiful, eerie and mysterious. It features nineteen rusalki who are river and lake spirits who come at night in the form of beautiful young women (according to Slavic mythology). They are said to be spirits of girls who died unmarried and unbaptised, and who killed themselves by drowning because of unrequited love. Kramskoi perfectly captured this folkloric story: the beauty of the women and the eerie and mysterious atmosphere that they evoke.
