Paul Gauguin was one of the proponents of the Cloisonnist style, a characteristic of Post-Impressionism that uses bold and flat forms with the minimal use of shading, with each figure separated only by dark lines. Gauguin employed this style in one of his most famous symbolical painting, "The Yellow Christ." The painting portrays Christ in yellow. The setting is 19th century Northern France. Christ is surrounded by Breton women praying, and behind is a yellow, red and green landscape.
