Titian painted a series of oil paintings on mythological subjects for the Duke of Ferrera. One of the famous paintings in that classical collection is Bacchus and Ariadne. Raphael was first asked to paint the subject. However, he died and was not able to complete it. The task was then passed on to Titian. The painting drew heavily on the classical texts of the poets Ovid and Catullus. Many scholars consider this as one of the best paintings by Titian.
