Hylas was a character in classical Greek mythology. He was best known as the servant and companion of Heracles. While there are many accounts about him in the books, the one that stuck the most to popular imagination which also became a favorite theme in ancient art as well the enduring subject for Western art was Hylas’ abduction by the nymphs. He fell in love with the nymphs and stayed with them as alluded in the Canto by Edmund Spenser. This scene is perfectly captured by John William Waterhouse in his masterpiece, Hylas and the Nymphs.
