Vincent Van Gogh struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts in his lifetime. Prior to his suicide, he cut his right ear. He chronicled this experience perhaps as a form of therapy or as a form of reminding him of that suicidal move. Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear shows Van Gogh in an unhealthy state with a bandaged right ear and smoking a pipe. It is done in a Post-Impressionist style and was finished in 1889.
