Giuseppe Arcimboldo was known fro his symbolical and allegorical portraits which heavily rely on the use of objects, symbols and fruits. Summer is one of the four paintings that was part of his Four Seasons collection. In this painting, the artist personified the season of summer by painting fruits and vegetables and other lush objects to form a person, facing sideways, wearing a golden summer suit. While this style was not an original, Arcimboldo certainly made it his own. Now the artist’s name has been associated with weird-looking portraits of persons made of fruits.
