As a prelude to his final period in the 1890s, Paul Cezanne painted a series of oil paintings called The Card Players. This particular painting is among the five paintings in the series. It features two Provencal peasants calmly and seriously playing cards. They look immersed in their game and seemingly formal. With a wine bottle on the table, they seem rather forma, contrary to the usual rowdy and drunken depictions of card players in the Dutch and French paintings in the 17th century. This painting, along with the other paintings in the collection, again showcases Cezanne’s talent as one of the leading Impressionist painters of all time.
