This 1838 masterpiece, finished during the height of William Turner’s career, is also considered as one of the artist’s most recognizable works. The subject of the painting is the Temeraire, which was one of the last ships that played a crucial role in the Battle of Trafalgar that transpired Iin 1805. The painting is remarked for its stunning and unusual composition, with the old warship portrayed in ghostlike colors and positioned to the far left, in contras with the rising mist and triangle of bluish sky. There’s a sense of calmness and chaos in the painting all at once.
