Paul Gauguin painted Tahitian as his subjects in many of his paintings during the 1890s. This was after his travel to the island of Tahiti located in the South Pacific. While Tahiti, then a French colony, turned out to be different than that he expected, Gauguin portrayed as a pre-modern paradise, a land of leisure. The Seed of Areoi is the most popular painting in this subject matter. It is a portrait of a Tahitian woman with flat, bright and unrealistic colors in the background, invoking a sense of the imaginary. The style used is that of an early Fauvist and Expressionist.
