When it was first exhibited, the painting was not positively received by conservative critics, calling it "wild ugliness." But years passed by and the painting have taken on a new status and is now considered as one of the most important works of Russian art. Vrubel was fascinated about the "demon" and made various sketches before this. An "eternal nihilistic spirit," the demon is painted here not as someone or something evil, but as a majestic spirit with human qualities, sitting alone in deep thought.
