Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky was a Russian painter who became a member of various Russian art groups and societies, including the Peredvizhniki movement and Imperial Academy of Arts. He painted mostly genre paintings, portraits and landscapes. One of his most notable works is the 1892 painting "Reading a Letter." This painting features a peasant woman reading a letter outdoors. She is standing and holding a red umbrella, while intently reading a letter. She stands on a field of grass and flowers with some trees in the background. The use of deep red in her umbrella and some parts of her dress make her stand out against the hues of green around her.
