Van Gogh produced many paintings during his short-lived, tragic life. He was very prolific and made numerous series of paintings, including the famous Sunflowers series. There are two Sunflower series. The first group, exhibited in 1887, shows sunflowers lying on the ground. The second, exhibited in 1888, features sunflowers in a vase. This particular painting (the fourth version) belongs to the second installment. It is characterized by the use of the same tones for the flowers, vase, table and background. A typical Van Gogh still life.
