Huang Gongwang was a Chinese painter who believed an artist should not attempt to paint unless inspired to do so. He picked up his brush only when inspiration struck. This is a simple painting, in landscape format, showing a wintery scene. There is a house situated on a cliff edge which occupies a central position in the painting; alongside the house are rocky, tree lined outcrops and in the background is a snow covered mountain range. The title is of the painting is "Clearing After Sudden Snow. ca. 1340". The orange sun above the mountain range and the orange artists stamps to the left and right of the painting create a balanced symmetry.
