Spring Morning in the Han Palace is a famous handscroll by the 16th century Ming Dynasty artist, Qiu Ying. It depicts imperial Chinese life at its most idyllic. Within the walls of the Palace compound we see predominantly women engaged in all kinds of social and cultural activities, from taking art classes, to playing musical instruments, to dancing, to gardening, to child care. The garden has trees and flowers with peacocks on the lawn. During the years of the Qing Dynasty, copies such of this of Qiu Ying's painting were popular because they were considered an excellent guide to elegant behavior.
