Bernhard Rode (25 July 1725 – 28 June 1797) was a Prussian artist and is well known for portraying historical scenes and allegorical works. Here we see Rode's colourful depiction of the Emperor of China taking part in a ceremony. He is walking behind a pair of oxen who are pulling a plough. The Emperor is elaborately dressed in a yellow gown; his assistants are at hand to hold up his umbrella and to scoop up his flowing gown. In the distance we see workers tending to the land.
