Shen Zhou was a Chinese painter in the Ming dynasty. He painted a series of 12 paintings showing various scenes he could see from Tiger Hill in Suzhou. In this particular painting he paints his view of The Thousand Buddha Hall and the Pagoda of the Cloudy Cliff Monastery which are shown in the foreground. In the background he paints a bridge and a boatsman rowing on a lake, with a mountain range in the distance. The paintings collectively portray traditional Chinese motifs, such as Buddhist subjects, human figures, landscapes, animals, flowers and ink bamboo.
