Breton Wrestlers By Paul Serusier - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting On Canvas
Paul Serusier was heavily influenced by Gauguin. The influence is evident in his works like the Talisman and the "Breton Wrestling." In the latter, Serusier portrayed the traditional Breton wrestling, called the "gouren." The painting feels archaic and naive, in a flat space without perspective and depth. But such portrayal is deliberate. Here, two boys are wrestling and at the background, the audience, mostly women clad in Breton coifs, stand watching. It is a tradition preserved in the canvas, through the hands of a great artist.
