George Bellow was a chronicler of New York: the city, its settlers, the streetwise subjects. "Forty-Two Kids" is a great sketch of the city's outskirts. It features naked and half-naked boys in the city's East River where there's a dilapidated wharf. For these boys, this place is heaven, a sanctuary in the constantly modernising and growing city. They are doing all sorts of antics: diving, swimming, sunbathing, smoking.
