In the Orchard By James Guthrie - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting On Canvas
Between 1885 to 1886, James Guthrie painted large scale works. One of these paintings is "In the Orchard," which was partly painted during his stay in a small village called Cockburnspath, and finished in Glasgow and Kirkcudbright. What makes this painting unusual is its subject. During those times, large scale paintings are reserved for major themes like historical scenes or religious subjects. This painting, however, features a young boy and girl collecting fallen apples in the orchard. The summer sunlight shines upon them, passing through the gaps in the trees. It's such a lovely picture, almost romantic.
