Jean Beraud was a French painter who was best known for depicting life in Paris during the late 19th century and early 20th century. He was a chronicler of Parisian life. One of his many paintings on this subject is the "La Lettre." It features a man and woman sitting inside a corner of an unnamed cafe. The woman is writing something on a notebook, which most likely is a letter, based on the title. The man is sitting smoking a cigarette, perhaps thinking something or just merely passing the time. There are also a few glasses of drinks are on the table.
