Study (Young Male Nude Seated beside the Sea) By Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting On Canvas
Despite it being produced early in Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin's career, this painting remains to be one of his best works. He painted "Study (Young Male Nude Seated beside the Sea)" in fulfilment of the bursary's requirements after he had won the Prix de Rome in 1832. Although it's a study, this painting gained the attention of contemporary French art critics and established the artist's career. It depicts a naked young man sitting on a rock with his arms wrapped around his legs, into a ball shape, with his head resting on his knees. He appears as solid as the rock he's sitting on. In the background is a view of the sea with no distinguishable landmarks.
