Famous Art Pt. 4

The Annunciation By Henry Ossawa Tanner - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting On Canvas

Henry Ossawa Tanner took a different approach when he painted religious subjects. An example of this is "The Annunciation." It is quite unconventional compared to other paintings about the Annunciation. It does not appear religious at all. It is very grounded and is set in a particular culture. Here, Mary appears very human. She is wearing a Middle Eastern peasant clothing, without any holy attributes. She is sitting in a corner. The Angel Gabriel appears and declares unto her that she will conceive the son of God. Gabriel does not appear as a human form or even an angel. In this painting, he is depicted as a shaft of light, more like the Holy Ghost than an angel.
