Not every proposition is met positively, and not all women even during the 1600s easily say yes to men. This is what Judith Lester depicted in her 1631 painting, The Proposition. It features a man and a woman. The man, a looming figure, leans over the woman, offering her coins, as though offering a dowry of courtship. But the woman disregards his proposition and instead intently continues sewing. The man is painted in dark tones and wearing dark clothing. In contrast, the woman wears a white blouse and is fully lit by the candlelight. This gives the woman a sense of illumination and empowerment.
