Famous Art Pt. 2

Dempsey and Firpo By George Bellows - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting On Canvas

George Bellows was a chronicler of New York's working class during the early years of the 20th century. "Dempsey and Firpo" captures the gritty image of that period. It is one of the paintings from his boxing series. It is based on an illustration he made when he was assigned to cover the prizefight between Jack Dempsey and Luis Firpo. In the illustration, as well as in this painting, he depicted the moment when Firpo knocked Dempsey down. Bellows perfectly captured the triumphant pose of Firpo, the fall of Dempsey, the expressions of the stunned audience, and all the drama and struggle in and outside the ring.
