Barge Haulers On The Volga by Ilya Repin - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas

Burlaks were laborers who drag barge and other vessels upstream. This form of inhuman labor was condemned and painfully depicted by the Russian realist painter Ilya Repin in his painting, Barge Haulers on the Volga. In this painting, there are 11 physically exhausted laborers dragging a barge on the banks of the Volga River. They look pressured by the heavy load under the hot weather, about to collapse of thirst, hunger and exhaustion. There is however one young man in the painting that stands heroic and fights against the leather that binds them. This symbolizes the artist’s strong stand against such kind of inhuman practice.
