Juan Gris loved to use mathematical proportions, geometrical forms and a complex system of grids in his paintings. He also loved to paint cafes, including this particular portrait of a man in a cafe. Unlike its counterpart, The Man at the Café, this painting, The Man in a Café, is less abstract. Here, one can see a gentleman in black suit and top hat with a drink in hand. The style is still Cubism but there is more form here. Letters “AP” and “PIC” are also seen in the painting, which can be easily deciphered as Picasso and Apollinaire, the two other proponents of Cubism, which Gris co-created.
