Street, Berlin by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas
Before the First World War broke out, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner painted several street scenes that illustrated the chaos and hustle-bustle of the city life in Berlin, touching as well on the relationship between men and women. Street, Berlin is a 1913 that depicts men and women walking down a sidewalk at a busy part of the city. It focuses two women in the foreground with the men in black depicted as copies of each other. The visible and loose brushstrokes, the seemingly distorted figures, and the tilting downward perspective create a sense of motion, perfectly capturing the hustle and bustle of the city street at night. This is complemented by the use of anti-natural colors common in German Expressionism at that period.
