This artwork of Sandro Botticelli is a portrayal of the epic poem Inferno by Dante Alighieri. It described a bottomless pit that leads to the underworld, the hell. Botticelli and Alighieri both interpreted hell as an abyss, a tunnel down to the core of the earth that believed to be the cave created when God threw Lucifer out from heaven. It was told that Lucifer was stuck in the middle of it. The tunnel has nine rings that represented categories of sins. Sins like Lust, gluttony, greed, anger, revenge and those unbaptized souls belonged to the first five rings, and those who committed murder, suicides and blasphemy belonged to the six and seven rings. Fraud and treachery belonged to the eight and nine rings. In the bible the description of hell is a chamber of fire but Botticelli’s painting of hell is an abyss.
