Aside from documenting the surrounding landscapes of Pissaro’s hometown Osny, a countryside near Pontoise; Camille Pissarro also made its inhabitants as his subjects in his works. This particular painting is a domestic and intimate one. The Little Country Maid features a young lady cleaning the dining room, the setting of which is the artist’s house. As common among Impressionist artists, the painting cuts off objects at the edges. This gives the work a sense of immediacy which is what Impressionism likes to capture. However, the brushstrokes used by the artist started to deviate from his Impressionist sensibility. The strokes are feathery and small, marking Pissarro’s move towards Neo-Impressionism.
