The Raft Of The Medusa by Theodore Gericault - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas

The Raft of the Medusa was considered an icon of French Romanticism when it was completed and exhibited in 1818-1819. It remains as one of the most influential works from that era and is the best work of French painter Theodore Gericault. This over-life-size masterpiece stunningly chronicles the infamous tragedy that is the wreckage of the frigate Medusa. Because it was hurriedly built, the raft ran aground. Of its 147 passengers, only 15 survived. Many died of drowning, starvation, dehydration and cannibalism. This horror is perfectly captured in the painting, by using a chaotic presentation, gloomy tones and dark colors.
