This 1886 painting depicts Hindu Goddess Saraswati who represents education, creativity, and music.  Saraswati is known to bring order out of chaos and has a calming and centering personality. She is sitting on a log next to a river playing the Sitar. She is wearing a red bodice beneath a flowing white and gold sari. On the ground next to her bare feet we see a magnificent peacock. She is engrossed in the music of the Sitar.
