Amrita Sher-Gil was a Hungarian-Indian painter. She has been called one of the greatest avant-garde women artists of the early 20th century. Sher-Gil often spent her summer holidays in Hungary visiting family. This painting is an informal portrait of Klarra Szepessy, her Hungarian cousin, who is shown seated on a floral sofa against a yellow wall. She wears a sleeveless summery white dress with a single strand of pearls around her neck and a bracelet on her wrist. Her cheeks are rosy; her eyes make direct contact with the viewer.
