Krishna Playing Blindman’s Bluff, 1750 by Manaku - FAMOUS INDIAN ART - HANDMADE OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS

from $280.00

Manaku of Guler was an Indian painter from the Guler State who was recognised as an exponent of the Pahari style of painting. In this playful composition, Krishna plays  ‘Blind Man’s Bluff’ with his fellow gopas. Wearing a yellow wrap, Krishna crouches upon a hillside, one of his cowherd friends covering his eyes while his other companions run away to hide. The gopas hide behind each other and within the trees, while their cow herd rests in the foreground. Stars in the evening sky and a resplendent full moon shine down on the proceedings evoking a mood of evening joy. The painting evokes the concept of divine play associated with Vaishnav mythology where the world is seen a stage of divine play in which a god (Krishna) interacts with his devotees.
