Baijnath, the artist, was the son of the famous painter Chokha. "M. Balwant Singh with Colonel Borthwick" was painted in 1825. It shows Maharaja Balwant Singh of Ratlam in procession with Colonel Borthwick. Both gentlemen are being carried on the back of elaborately decorated elephants. At the front of the procession there are foot soldiers, who glance back at the entourage. To the rear of the procession there are soldiers on horseback. The scene is set against an backdrop of urban Indian architecture.
