Maharani Tarabai of Karvir 1927 By Mahadev Vishwanath Dhurandhar - Famous Indian Art - Handmade oil painting on canvas

from $399.00

M.V. Dhurandhar, is perhaps the best-known academic artist after Raja Ravi Varma. His painting 'Maharani Tarabai of Karvir', 1927 is a large-scale work. His classical training and skill are evident in this rendition of Rani Tarabai (the wife of Rajaram) in battle. Rani Tarabai came to power as the Queen Regent by establishing her four-year-old son Shivaji II as the rightful leader of the Maratha kingdom in 1700. She was an indomitable warrior. In this painting we see her centre-stage, mounted on a black horse, wielding a sword. She is ascending a mountain path, along with her army of foot soldiers, all of whom are armed with spears and shields. The destination is a castle at the top of the mountain.
