Rawat Gokal Das celebrating Holi in the Zenana 1808 By Chatara Bagta - Famous Indian Art - Handmade oil painting on canvas

from $295.00

Indian artist Bagta (1761-1814) was a Rajput painter who worked in Udaipur in the late 1700s, and then at the court of The Rawats, who ruled in Devgarh. This portrait, painted in 1808, depicts the imposing figure of Rawat Gokal Das celebrating 'holi' with his consorts This is a rare large-scale composition, unlike most of the artist's other works. The scene is set inside a marbled palace with intricate jaalis. It shows the palace interior featuring the women’s quarter (zenana). In the center, on a raised platform, we see the patron Gokul Das, seated comfortably as he squirts different shades of colour onto the ladies. The royal women are also in a playful mood. One of them is about to splash a handful of red color onto Rawat. Wearing jewellery and vibrant coloured traditional clothing, the women display an array of expressions. Some are shy and excited, others look a little uneasy. Behind the Rawat is a row of attendants holding his paraphernalia. On the lower right of the painting, musicians dance and sing. A royal blue sky and a line of clouds and flying birds make the upper part serene. The overall mood of the scene is one of romance and ecstasy.
