Untitled Portrait of Damayanti By Raja Ravi Varma - Famous Indian Art - Handmade oil painting on canvas

from $378.00

Raja Ravi Varma, often considered the father of modern Indian art and was declared a national treasure by the Indian government in 1979. Born in Kerala in 1848, he drew inspiration from old European master paintings and fused Western techniques with traditional Eastern sensibilities. In this artwork titled 'Untitled portrait of Damayanti", Raja Ravi Varma combines classic Indian mythology with European realism. He uses a composition taken from a photograph of a European performance of 'L'inamorata'/ The Feast of the Roses (1900) to re-imagine a scene from the Indian Sanskrit play 'Nala and Damayanti'. We see two women poised on balcony. The heroine Damayanti wears a glimmering white sari. Standing attentively next to her, holding a fan and wearing a blue sari, is her Royal maid. The gold ornamentation and borders of both women's' saris stand out. The white veranda floor is strewn with delicate flowers contrasting with the moody skies above. The overall ambience of the painting is atmospheric yet tranquil.
